Valve is preparing a version of the gaming platform Steam for Mac. In last Wednesday, was released a new Windows version of Steam beta and includes a new browser based on WebKit, improved appearance and customizable groups. Exploring Steam, more specifically the Steam folder / Graphics, we can find 10 images with specific buttons for Mac, and in the Steam / Resource / Menus, we also found a file with the name “osx.menu”.

The availability of the Steam port for Mac is unknown, but if this become a reality, it will brings a huge impact (very important by the way) in the game industry for Mac. Steam technology in Mac is a step to Valve convert their own games (the most popular in the Windows world) for the Apple platform. The Valve’s portfolio includes Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2 and Half-Life 2. Steam is also very popular for online sale of third party companies, and the lack of a cross-platform client may be undermining the interest in developing for Mac OS X.

Over the years Apple has shown little interest in games for Mac OS X platform, showing the Mac as a professional platform and focus on productivity applications and entertainment conventional. But since the popularization of the Mac, the migration to Intel, and the remarkable introduction of the iPhone and iPad, everything seems to have changed. Perhaps now the Mac, will be not only a professional platform, but also an entertainment system.
