This is a big surprise for all Linux fans, and for those awaiting for the new Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. According to some beta testers, iPhone (including 3GS) and iPod Touch, works perfectly in Alpha 3, without any kind of modification, jailbreak, or changes to firmware/software, and both are compatible with the Nautilus and Rhythmbox.
Several users reported that after installing the third alpha release of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, the iPod Touch and iPhone are immediately recognized by the operating system, and you can navigate through the gadget from the Nautilus file manager (simmilar to Apple Finder). Rythmbox is a media player that synchronizes the music with iPhone and iPod touch, similar to Apple iTunes.

This technology has been implemented in Linux using a new lib developed especially for this purpose: the libiphone. The libiphone combined with iFuse (a file system driver that allows to connect the iPhone and iPod Touch to Linux), makes Linux compatible with Apple AFC protocol, turning obsolete the access through SSH (via Jailbreak).
The protocol supports now synchronization of music and photos. Support for the calendar and contacts are under way – this kind of synchronization will be performed through Conduit app. Much work remains to be done, but I think it is a big step for all Ubuntu users and proudly owners of Apple iPhone.
